The Power of Kindness: my personal and professional search for empathy in healthcare: When he was a little boy, Dr. Brian Goldman was known as a breath of fresh air. But, as a veteran ED physician, he began to wonder if he had lost his capacity for kindness. An incident in the ED sent Goldman on a journey to recover the empathy he once had - through his brain, his heart and around the world. He shares his journey along with how to be the emphatic person you are hardwired to be.
On September 25, the $15 day-long event will include keynote speaker Dr. Brian Goldman, host of the CBC’s award-winning radio show White Coat, Black Art. Title: Empathy: the Secret Sauce for Seniors Description: We have an ageing society, and dementia is on the rise. Clients of the health care system have increasingly complex needs. They deserve empathy and kindness. The good news is that like all human beings, health service providers are hardwired to be kind and empathic. In his keynote address, Dr. Brian Goldman unpacks the factors in healthcare such as stress, overwork, and burnout that get in the way of empathy, and how to put them back. He describes what an emphatic healthcare system looks and feels like, from patient and family-centred care to addressing loneliness and social isolation among seniors.
